Many of us who own a website have heard the term domain name, but if you are like most people and don’t know much about the internet or computers you probably don’t know what a domain name is or what it does. This blog will answer those questions in simple and none technical language that can be understood.
A domain name appears in the address bar of your web browser. For example the domain name for Fig Creative would be figcreative.com.au. Each website has a domain name and it is unique to that website. A domain name serves as an address which is used to open a website.
There are different domains names for specific types of websites, such as a government agencies websites has a .gov at the end of their domain name like australia.gov.au. Network organisations have .net at the end of theirs, indicating what type of website it is. These are called domain suffix extension’s which helps identify what type of website it is and what it represents. No two websites can be the same with the same name and suffix extension like .com, .org, .info etc.
So what is a domain name? It is the address or name to a website that is shown in the address bar of your web browser.
A domain name acts like a foundation for a website and it needs to be registered for a website to be built and to appear on Google. So how do you register a domain name? And what is a registrar? A registrar is like a warehouse that stores all different types of domains and there are many of them that offer different types of domain names. To register is simple and cheap to do. At Fig Creative we do all the technical stuff, all you have to do is think of a creative name that goes with you company. To register a domain name is low priced but they need to be renewed every two years.
Choosing your domain name can be tricky as most common words are already registered, so it is a time to get creative and play around with words. For example, if you want to create a health website say ideasforhealth.com.au you may need to change for to the number 4.
Once you have decided on a domain name, we register it and it is yours to keep until you decide to stop renewing it. After we have registered your domain name into our registrar you will be given a username and password so you will be able to check your domain name and when it expires.
If a domain is not renewed you may lose ownership of that domain and then it becomes accessible for other companies to purchase. To make sure an expiry doesn’t happen Fig Creative invoices you a month or even six weeks in advance so that you are well aware of the approaching expiry date.
Your domain name is vital for your website, if it expires then your whole website goes down, so it may be a small thing but it is very important. A domain is the address to your website and it works as a door to your website, if expired or the door is closed no one can access your website on google, not even the owner.
